The Volkswagen Golf GTI and Renaultsport Megane are two very different hot hatches. The French machine is all about uncompromised performance, whereas the German hatch is much more of an all-rounder. But does this mean the Renault Megane RS will always be faster on a racetrack?

Well, that’s not necessarily true. The Golf GTI in our video has been fitted with the Performance Pack, getting bigger brakes, a power upgrade to take the 2.0-litre engine up to 230bhp and a very clever electronic front differential.

The Renault Megane RS Cup has a traditional limited-slip diff, but also has a 2.0-litre turbo engine. However the Renault has 265bhp – 35 more than the Golf.

For several years Renaultsport has been the ‘master-craftsman’ of the hot hatch trade. I know it’s getting a bit long in the tooth but the Cup Megane is the best car they make. But what’s it like on track? Is it going to be quick enough to take on the new Golf GTI with the Performance Pack? You can find out in the video above.

We’re driving the car with the stability control turned off, which is what gives this car a big advantage on the track – when it’s off, it is off. Plus, there’s an instant liveliness to the Megane chassis, at the rear end.

The Renault completed the flying lap in 1 minute 14.3 seconds. Can the lower-powered and easier to live with Golf get anywhere near that mark?

There’s no question that the Golf GTI is the most desirable hot hatch you can buy, but there has always been two camps in the hot hatch market: those who want the all-rounder (which is the GTI) and those who want the hardcore, ultimate track car (which arguably is the Renaultsport Megane).

The question is whether this GTI with the Performance Pack and a manual gearbox can outperform the Renault Megane. It’s a shame you can’t turn off the stability control because it starts to come into play and that contributes to the brakes getting hot and just takes away that final edge of freedom you need to make this car fully engaging like the Renault.

The Golf GTI performance pack completed the flying lap in 1 minute 15.6 seconds. In the end the Golf GTI Performance Pack was 1.3 seconds a lap slower than the Megane RS Cup, so even though VW has added extra performance to the car, if it’s quick laps you’re after, the Renaultsport Megane is still number one.

New 2018 Renault Megane RS (third-generation of the iconic car) now made even more powerful by a new turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection. The 4-cylinder 1.8-litre (1,798cc) unit combines maximum power of 280 horsepower (205 kW) at 6,000rpm with peak torque of 390 Nm, a figure that puts it amongst the very best in its class. The New Mégane R.S. is equipped with 4CONTROL, with four-wheel steering, a global first for the segment, now affording the car’s Sport and Cup versions outstanding agility through tight turns and impressive cornering stability at higher speeds.

New Mégane RS is differentiated by four hydraulic compression bump stops, inspired by rally driving. This configuration provides the Cup version of the car with optimal handling efficiency on all types of road, plus a level of comfort that is unprecedented in the car’s class for the Sport version. Combined with entirely redesigned independent steering axis front suspension for even sharper precision, the Cup version’s new Torsen limited slip differential improves traction and cornering speeds. For the first time, the All-New Mégane R.S. can be specified with a choice of two types of transmission, namely a six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed EDC dual clutch transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle-shift gear changes.

Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy-R was designed with a big challenge in mind: to set a new record on Nürburgring’s northern loop, the legendary Nordschleife. On May 15 at 7.15 am, Renault Sport’s driver set off on a 20,832 km route in pursuit of that goal. Seven minutes and fifty four seconds later, the pressure subsided and gave way to joy!

A Renault lança picape Alaskan para concorrer também entre as médias

Será a primeira com capacidade de 1 tonelada da Renault.
Brasil receberá o modelo em 2018; primeiro vai para Colômbia e Argentina.

Apesar de ainda não ter divulgado preços, a Renault diz que a Alaskan chegará com valor competitivo comparado às rivais. “Não temos arrogância de entrar em um segmento e vender com preço maior do que os concorrentes”, disse Olivier Murguet, vice-presidente sênior da Renault para as Américas.

Motores 2.3 e 2.5
Primeira picape da marca com capacidade para levar 1 tonelada, o modelo terá motores 2.3 (160 cavalos e 190 cv) e 2.5 (160 cv e 190 cv também), ambos a diesel e de 4 cilindros, herdados da van Master, além de um 2.5 a gasolina, de 160 cv.

Para o Brasil, o motor escolhido foi o 2.3, com câmbios manual ou automático e tração 4×2 ou 4×4.

A Renault adianta que haverá mais de um tipo de cabine e caçamba maior e menor.

A distância em relação ao solo será de 23 centímetros. As demais medidas não foram divulgadas.

A picape terá suspensão do tipo multilink de 5 braços, assistente de partida em rampa e de descida e será oferecida com opção de tração 4×2, 4×4 e 4×4 reduzida. Além disso, haverá câmera 360 graus.

No entanto, ao contrário da Oroch, que tem visual derivado do SUV Duster (da subsidiária romena Dacia), a nova picape tem visual próprio, baseado na identidade da marca francesa.

O modelo será global e foi desenvolvido na França, Japão e América Latina. Além de Argentina e México, será produzido em Barcelona, na Espanha.

No mercado brasileiro, a Alaskan deve brigar com as tradicionais Toyota Hilux, Chevrolet S10, Ford Ranger, entre outras.
