In a wholly unforeseen turn of events, SpaceX has taken the extraordinary step of permanently scrapping both its Port of Los Angeles-based BFR development tent and what seem to be the majority of what it contained, irreparably destroying custom-built tooling meant to support the fabrication of carbon composite BFR spaceships and boosters.

Likely worth anywhere from several to tens of millions of dollars (USD), SpaceX’s advanced BFR production tools were procured from industry-expert Ascent Aerospace sometime in 2017 before being officially delivered to the rocket company’s newly-erected Port of LA tent around April 2018. Situated at the port specifically due to logistical concerns about the high cost of transporting 9m/30ft-diameter objects from SpaceX’s main Hawthorne facilities to a barge for transport east, the company has decided to unequivocally destroy its aerospace-grade composite tooling less than 12 months after accepting delivery. Put simply, this is the best evidence yet that SpaceX – willing or not – has gone all-in on build Starship and Super Heavy out of stainless steel less than six months after CEO Elon Musk began to hint at the program’s utterly radical pivot.

From the very beginning of SpaceX and Elon Musk’s serious pursuit of an entirely reusable launch vehicle capable of transporting dozens of astronauts and passengers to and from Earth and Mars, the plan had been to build the vast majority of the rocket’s booster and spacecraft structures out of advanced carbon fiber composite materials. Above all else, this fundamental architecture was motivated largely by the significant performance gains a rocket could achieve by replacing traditional aluminum tanks and structures with carbon fiber.

For a rocket (and especially an orbital spaceship) meant to somehow make Earth-Mars transport both routine and at least minutely affordable, focusing primarily on the optimization of the mass of cargo delivered relative to the empty weight of the spaceship and booster made (and still does make) a great deal of sense. Assuming that the reusability of a system is roughly constant, the only conceivable way to further lower the cost of price per unit of cargo or passenger ticket would be to increase the usable cargo/passenger capacity for each individual launch, making an extremely light and high-performance rocket the low-hanging fruit target.

The centrality of carbon fiber composites remained with SpaceX’s Sept. 2017 iteration of BFR, downsized by 25% to a diameter of 9m (~30 ft). Around six months later, that commitment to composites was further solidified by the delivery of the first 9m-diameter carbon fiber tooling in March or April 2018. The tooling used to mold and lay up aerospace-grade advanced carbon fiber structures is inherently expensive, demanding extremely low tolerances across massive surface areas and volumes in order to ensure the quality of the equally massive and low-tolerance composite structures they are used to build. Actual prices are often closely guarded and difficult to determine or extrapolate off of, but it’s safe to say that SpaceX likely spent months of effort and at least several million dollars to acquire its large BFR mandrel.

In the subsequent months of 2018, SpaceX’s BFR and composite R&D team spent tens of thousands of hours building out an ad-hoc advanced composites workshop inside a temporary tent in an industrial area, and ultimately managed to build a number of full-scale carbon fiber segments, including at least one large tank barrel section and the beginnings of a tank dome. In September 2018, that progress was partially revealed alongside the announcement that Japanese billionaire Yasuka Maezawa had purchased the first crewed lunar launch of BFR for several hundred million dollars, set to occur no earlier than 2023.



Two months after indicating that the first BFR “airframe/tank barrel section” would be built out of a “new carbon fiber material”, Musk provided the very first teaser for a “counterintuitive” development that would later be identified as the CEO’s decision to wholly replace BFR’s proposed used of composites with stainless steel and an advanced metallic heat shield. Still more than a little controversial and hard to follow almost half a year later, the feeling at the time was that SpaceX’s eccentric leader had decided to throw away more than 24 months of composite BFR design and development work for an almost entirely unproven alternative approach.

For better or for worse, it appears that SpaceX (or maybe just Musk) has quite literally trashed the most concrete demonstration of a prior commitment to advanced carbon fiber composites, scrapping the vast majority of its composite tooling and perhaps even the prototype BFR segments built in 2018.

It remains to be seen whether the now-permanent decision to pursue a stainless steel design in place of carbon fiber was a very expensive mistake, a stroke of genius, or something in between, However, the undeniably brisk progress made with the BFR’s steel variant in last four or so months bodes well – at a minimum – for Musk’s optimism that this radical change will ultimately result in an operational vehicle far sooner (and presumably cheaper) than the composites route.

Generally speaking, it seems safe to – on the face of it – agree with Musk’s argument that steel should ultimately lend itself far more easily to reusability thanks to its high tolerance for extreme temperatures. Unlike Falcon 9’s aluminum structures (and even the most exotic, advanced carbon fiber composites), certain varieties of stainless steel can weather heating approaching that experienced during orbital reentry with minimal erosion or damage to its mechanical properties. As Musk puts it, the Super Heavy booster’s suborbital trajectory could require almost no heat shielding – and perhaps even paint – at all.


Only time will tell whether the inevitably harsher realities of real-life engineering are so kind. In the meantime, SpaceX is perhaps just hours away from the first attempted static-fire test of a Raptor installed on something approaching flight-hardware, in this case a full-scale Starship hop test prototype.

Tesla shares (NASDAQ:TSLA) might be facing headwinds in the market recently due to concerns over the company’s performance in the first quarter and Elon Musk’s ongoing issues with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), but a Wall Street analyst has argued that the electric car maker’s operations are doing better than expected.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, together with his peer Strecker Backe, recently took a tour of Tesla’s Fremont plant in California and the company’s Gigafactory 1 in Nevada. By the end of their visit and analysis, the two analysts doubled down on their bull case, partly due to the progress that the company has made with its battery and electric vehicle production.

A visit to Tesla’s Fremont factory will not be complete without a tour of the infamous tent housing an assembly line for the Model 3. While the sprung structure has remained polarizing and a constant target of ridicule from Tesla’s critics, Ives noted that the tent-based assembly line is actually performing very well, with processes in the location being robust and streamlined. “It was jaw-dropping in how efficient that process has now become in the tent. This is not a company that’s slowing down production,” Ives noted.

The Wedbush analysts were equally impressed by Tesla’s progress in its operations at Gigafactory 1, where it produces batteries and drive units for the Model 3. Ives wrote in a recent report to clients that based on what he has seen, Gigafactory 1’s current output will be able to support a steady production rate of 7,000 Model 3 per week, thanks to “more automation, robotics, data analysis, and streamlined capacity” at the site.

Commenting on Tesla’s recent challenges, which include Elon Musk and the SEC’s ongoing skirmishes, the Wedbush analyst argued that the electric car maker’s long-term strategy remains stable. “I view this as a company where, it was never going to be an easy road for Tesla. A lot of the issues are unfortunate that are happening with the SEC and Musk, and it’s created a sideshow that’s been a bit of an overhang on the name. But I look at the name as the first inning of what I view as a massive EV transformation that’s going to happen over the next decade,” Ives said.

Tesla is currently conducting its end of quarter push for Q1 2019. The company is hard at work delivering the Model 3 to China and Europe, the vehicle’s first two foreign markets. A leaked email from Tesla senior vice president Sanjay Shah also suggested that Tesla is rallying its workers to deliver up to 30,000 vehicles during the second half of March.

Dan Ives has a price target of $390 per share for Tesla.

A new report from Adamas Intelligence—Rare Earth Pricing Outlook to 2030forecasts global rare earth supply and demand to 2030 under two scenarios to examine how oxide prices will evolve in the years ahead.

With increased government oversight and an ongoing crackdown on illegal rare earth production in China, Myanmar and the US have emerged as important sources of rare earth feedstock for China’s producers, without which the global market would currently be experiencing substantial shortages of rare earths used in permanent magnets, such as neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium.

Since November 2018, China’s HREO-rich concentrate imports from Myanmar have been cut in half as some Chinese provinces have started to restrict imports due to concerns that Myanmar is being used to launder illegally produced concentrate from China.

Stemming from these concerns, market participants in China indicate that Beijing may implement a comprehensive ban on imports of rare earth materials from Myanmar in May 2019—a move that will severely curtail availability of HREO feedstocks in China, adding support for higher dysprosium, terbium and gadolinium prices in the near-term.

Over the long-term, Adamas forecasts that China’s average rare earth production costs will rise steadily from 2018 through 2030 as higher-cost production capacity is brought online, and Chinese producers increasingly absorb formerly external costs associated with waste gas, waste water, radioactive waste, resource depletion and land occupation.

These cost increases will add support for sustained price increases for virtually all rare earth oxides produced in China, although the rare earths used in permanent magnets are projected to increase at the fastest rate as global supply struggles to keep up with rapidly growing demand throughout the approaching decade.

Compared with cars, SUVs consume more energy per vehicle mile. Consequently, SUVs emit more carbon dioxide per vehicle mile than do cars. However, in the United States, the typical occupancy is higher for SUVs than for cars. The issue of interest in this study was the resultant energy usage per occupant distance. In other words, does the higher occupancy of SUVs compensate for their higher energy consumption per vehicle distance when considering energy consumption per occupant distance?

The analysis used the following data for cars and for SUVs:

The results are shown in the table below.

The final step of the analysis (with the results shown in the last row of the table above) took into account the fact that the increased occupant weight being carried by SUVs results in slightly lower fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce fuel economy by about 1%. Given that the difference in the average occupancy between SUVs and cars is 0.29 persons, and assuming the weight of 100 pounds for an average occupant (including men, women, and children), the calculations were rerun assuming a reduction of the average fuel economy of SUVs by 0.29% (from 23.3 mpg to 23.2 mpg).

In conclusion:

  • For model year 2017 vehicles, the average fuel consumption per vehicle distance is about 30% higher for SUVs than for cars. For example, the average SUV consumes 42.9 gallons of fuel per 1,000 vehicle miles, compared with 33.1 gallons for the average car.

  • However, taking into account the increased occupancy of SUVs, as well as the increased occupant weight, results in the average fuel consumption per occupant distance for SUVs being only about 10% higher than for cars. For example, the average SUV consumes 23.6 gallons of fuel per 1,000 occupant miles, compared with 21.5 gallons for the average car.

This superlative effort took Joaquim to second and Oriol to third place in the overall rankings, ensuring that the Team enters the half-way mark in a very strong position.

 Stage 3 of the Merzouga Rally was composed of two stages. The 229 km special was divided into two parts (89 km and 107 km) and riddled with navigational pitfalls. The first part was a little rugged and the second part required the riders to be on top of their navigation to get out of a labyrinth. The Rally came to a halt at the Marathon bivouac, where the competitors will be on their own to attend to their machines and themselves. With the first half of the marathon stage behind the riders, the second part of the Marathon will test them with another long day of riding to reunite with their teams back at the rally bivouac at Erfoud.

For a good 50km, I was at the head of the pack and riding with a very nice flow. I am happy to bring the bike safe to the Marathon Bivouac. One more stage in the books and only 2 more days to go.”

 Oriol’s teammate Joaquim Rodrigues, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “It was another long stage today.
