THIS is the McLaren Senna – AND I'VE BOUGHT ONE!

StoneBridge & K-Syran - Starry Night

This is the McLaren Senna and my secret is out of the bag – I’m getting one and taking delivery next year! The Senna is the newest member of McLaren’s Ultimate Series of hypercars and is designed and built to be their most track focused car ever. Named after the great Ayrton Senna, let’s explore everything that you could possibly want to know about it. From a first drive on track to a full in-depth walkaround of the exterior and interior, take a watch to see all about it and find out a bit more about my future car!

The McLaren Senna boast some incredible performance numbers; with 800hp and 800nm from the 4.0l twin turbo V8, combined with a total weight of just 1,198kg thanks to extensive use of carbon fibre as found in the carbon Monocage III, entire body panels (totally just 60kg), and just about everything built for lightweight. Not only that, but it also offers a ginormous 800kg of downforce thanks to a huge rear wing, active aero flaps in the front bumper, and numerous aero elements over the entire surface and internals of the car. The result is not only a car that will do 0-100km/h (62mph) in 2.8s, 0-200km/h (124mph) in 6.8s and 0-300km/h (186mph) in 16.8s and on to a top speed of 340km/h (211mph), but with such a focus on high downforce capabilities, it will also be one of the fastest cars ever around a race circuit while also being able to wear number plates and be driven on the road.

On the inside, the Senna features barely anything more than bare carbon and small Alcantara pads for the minimum in total weights. The seat shells total just 3.35kg and an infotainment display floats in the centre to provide controls and track telemetry information. The Start button and door release switches are located fighter jet style in the roof panel to minimise the weight of cabling running to the doors – every gram saved where possible.

My first foray into hypercar ownership will be with the same company through whom I first bought a supercar, McLaren. From first owning the 12C, I then moved through the 650S Spider and the 675LT Coupe to the 675LT Spider that I have owned for the last two years and will continue to own. Built in Woking, England, the Senna pays tribute to the late Ayrton Senna, who achieved immense success in Formula 1 for the outfit.

Upon arrival at Estoril, the very circuit where Ayrton achieved his first ever Grand Prix victory, it’s immediately out on track for a first session and drive in the Senna. This is followed by more time to dissect and fully explore the car to take in all of the numbers and details, both around the exterior and also inside. In addition an exhibition inside the pit garage shows numerous of the components that we can study in more detail to understand quite how these weight savings are made.

A second outing on track really gives me an opportunity to come to grips and start to get a real feeling for what the Senna can do. To keep it brief, there is no question the lap time performance on the road-legal Pirelli Trofeo R is similar to that of an FIA GT3 car – it is quite astonishingly capable for a car that still has the ability to wear a number plate.

More information about my future Senna will come in due course, but it is expected to arrive an early 2019, perhaps ready for February/March. You can be sure this marks the start of the Road to Senna, and there will be plenty more to come as you join me in the process towards my first hypercar.

Thanks for watching, Tim
